Winn Speed Lock 6″ Vise System compared to other quick change vise jaw systems

The Winn Speed Lock Vise with the integrated quick change jaw system differs from other quick change vise jaw systems because it allows you to use the standard Angle Lock style vise jaws without having to modify the vise jaws. Simply add the round nut assembly to the jaws. It does not reduce the internal 8″ opening capacity of the 6″ machine vise because the Speed Lock jaws mount directly into mounting blocks. Many quick change systems on the market use an add-on master jaw. This reduces the internal opening size of the vise and takes away from the rigidity of the vise. The Winn Speed Lock system does NOT use an add-on master jaw.

Another feature of the Winn Speed Lock System is that the jaws can be mounted on either the inside or the outside of the mounting blocks. The changeover time to move the jaws from inside to outside is less than 30 seconds.

With other quick change systems on the market that use an add-on master jaw, the jaws can only be mounted on inside of the mounting blocks. If the master jaw is mounted to the outside of the mounting blocks, the jaws will NOT be secure. The holding force of the vise would work against the locking features of the design and would cause the cause the vise jaw to come loose or come off. If this happens in the middle of a milling cut, the workpiece will come loose and ruin the part or injure the operator. Also these style of Dove Tail jaw systems use a 5/32 hex wrench that faces up to lock the jaws into place.

The Winn Speed Lock System uses the same 1/2-13 socket head cap screws as the original design, which means that it holds the vise jaws as strong and secure as the original “Kurt” design. (see cost comparison) This also means that the wrench to secure the vise jaws is a large easy to use 3/8 hex key wrench.

Some of our competitors use “low head socket head cap screws” and a special vise jaw that has a “t-slot” to accept the head of the “low head socket head cap screw”.
(See Patent #5,921,536 for Snap Jaws) The problem with this system is that it requires a special vise jaw with a “t-slot”, which means that the user must use this special vise jaw. They are expensive to purchase and if the user wants to make they own, they are difficult to manufacture. Also if the user has existing custom vise jaws that they built before the purchase of this system, they need to be modified before they can be used or take out the low head socket head cap screws and replace them with the standard socket head cap screws.

The Speed Lock System doesn’t have any of these issues. Because the Winn Speed Lock System uses the same hole location for the round nuts and the same standard socket head screw size as the original design of the angle lock vises. The vise jaws for our system can be used in all the ways that the originally angle lock vise design intended. All of your purchased and custom vise jaws that you already own can be used with no modifications on the Winn Speed Lock 6″ vise. This is because the Speed Lock System uses the same hole location for the round nuts and the same standard socket head screw size as the original design of the Angle Lock vises.
